May 1/2: New 800m PB for Leo Freeland
Competing for Wingate University at the South Atlantic Outdoor Championships at Lenoir-Rhyne University, Hickory, North Carolina, Leo Freeland was in the first of four heats, with only the winners and fastest four losers to make it through to Thursday’s Final.
Lying second in the bunch at the bell, covered in 56.47 seconds, he hung on well on the second lap to finish third in what turned out to be the fastest heat in 1:53.51, knocking almost a second off his previous best to move to 11th on the MMK all-time rankings. An anxious wait for the results confirmed he had made the final with the fifth fastest qualifying time.
In the Final the following day, Leo ran an even faster first lap, leading the pack in 55.44. However, he struggled on the second lap, just missing the pb he set the previous day, in sixth place.
