January 30/31: Zak Freeland runs sub-4-minute mile

Zak Freeland, representing Charlotte University at an indoor meeting in Clemson, South Carolina, smashed his own club indoor mile record by almost four seconds to run 3:59.75. Starting slowly near the back of the elite 13-man field, he gradually moved up, running sub-30-second 200m times for each of the last five laps to finish fourth just over a second behind the winner.

On the Saturday he ran in the elite men’s 3000m race. After the first 800m at 8-minute pace, he started to drift back, undoubtedly feeling the previous day’s efforts still in his legs. He completed the race in 8:21.30, some eight seconds slower than his best indoor time, set last year.
